5/31/2016 - The Progressive Conservatives are extremely concerned over the lack of transparency and timing of debate on the proposed Government Motion on Medical Assistance in Dying.
“Our Progressive Conservative caucus has received a number of questions and concerns from Albertans regarding this issue, and we share those same questions,” said Dr. Richard Starke, Progressive Conservative Critic for Health and MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster. “That is why we are calling on this government to table the draft regulations on medically assisted dying so all members of the Legislature can adequately debate this motion.”
5/19/2016 - Progressive Conservative Justice Critic and MLA for Calgary-West, Mike Ellis, issued the following statement today on the comprehensive review of Alberta’s bail system and resulting recommendations:
“I am encouraged to see that the recommendations suggested in the Alberta Bail Review address many of the concerns I raised with the Minister upon the announcement of the review process last year. The majority of these recommendations are positive steps and issues I have been advocating for since 2007, when I was directly involved as a bail hearing officer with the Calgary Police Service.
5/16/2016 - Fewer illicit drugs such as fentanyl and W-18 will be on our streets thanks to Bill 205: The Pharmacy and Drug Amendment Act, 2016, which received unanimous support in the Legislature today.
“Alberta now leads the nation in our fight against illicit drugs by restricting pill presses,” said Mike Ellis, Critic for Justice and Solicitor General and MLA for Calgary-West. “This bill will save lives. However, this is just one small step in our fight against opioid drug abuse. We must ensure there are strong intervention supports such as addiction counselling and long-term treatment beds to address the root causes of drug addiction.”
5/3/2016 - Progressive Conservative Interim Leader and MLA for Calgary-Hays, Ric McIver, issued the following statement today in response to the worsening wildfire situation in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo:
“Like so many Albertans across the province, the Progressive Conservative caucus is deeply concerned about the safety and wellbeing of residents of Fort McMurray, as wildfires continue bearing down on their community, and our hearts go out to those who have lost their homes. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the evacuees and first responders, who are working tirelessly to fight these fires and ensure residents are evacuated safely.
