C: Thank you & congratulations to the incredible community volunteers from Evergreen; I really enjoyed rolling up my sleeves with you to help build our beautiful new Playground!
R: Meeting with our local MP, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, during the Calgary Stampede!
Local advocacy is always on my mindTwo capital projects that Calgary-Lougheed constituents tell me they want to see completed as soon as possible are the Evergreen Middle School & the South West Calgary Ring Road. I take every opportunity to remind the new NDP government of the importance of these projects; & will not be satisfied until they are completed!
PC Caucus scrutinizes government actions and policiesWe regularly issue statements on current issues including the NDP government’s handling of Alberta’s economic challenges and the instability that their policies are creating for our economy. As the PC Critic for Advanced Education & Innovation, I am strongly encouraging the NDP government to maintain a sustainable system for post-secondary education in Alberta; & have sent a media a release in this regard. I also serve as the PC advocate for Aboriginal Relations; & it was after my questions in question period that Premier Notley made her residential schools apology. Another media release I authoured called for assistance for our Nepalese friends in Alberta whose families have been affected by the earthquake. I encourage you to read the full statements by visiting daverodney.ca; & I welcome feedback on our positions--we are seeking to present a balanced, common-sense approach to issues; & your input is critical to ensuring that we perform that work to your satisfaction!
Royalty Review Panel coming to CalgaryThe NDP Gov’t has launched its review of AB’s royalty structure under the guidance of a panel which is touring the province to hold community engagement sessions. Our PC Caucus encourages everyone with an interest to attend these sessions, to ensure that the panel obtains broad input from our all Albertans. The Calgary session is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 5, from 5:30 – 8:30 pm; but the location has yet to be announced: so if you would like to attend, please let me know—& I am happy to provide you with the venue information--as soon as it is announced.
Completing the smoke-free circleI am proud of our Smoke-Free Places legislation--from my first private member's bill in my first term, to my last government bill in my last term. I have submitted a new motion that calls upon the Government to ban electronic cigarettes wherever cigarettes are banned; & I will keep you apprised of progress. Please note:
- There is no evidence that e-cigarettes have the ability to end cigarette addiction.
- There are no standards or labelling requirements for e-cigarettes, which makes it difficult for users to know what chemicals are being used; but a typical mix includes propylene glycol--a manufactured ingredient in antifreeze & fog machines. Most liquids contain nicotine, & tests have determined that e-cigarettes labelled as “nicotine-free” regularly contain nicotine.
- Health Canada advises that e-cigarettes have not been well tested, are a choking hazard for children, can cause addiction & potential nicotine poisoning, & create other adverse health effects.
