“The heartbreaking loss of Sarah, Anthony and Mikwan is felt by each and every Albertan and our prayers are with the families and communities of these children. First Nations overrepresentation in the system is well documented and it is clear that we all must do much better in addressing these unique challenges.
While the work of the Ministerial Panel on Child Intervention continues, it is also clear that the Ministry has not been cooperating with the Child and Youth Advocate when it comes to the implementation of past recommendations. By failing to disclose the status of the Advocate’s October 2016 recommendations, the department of Children’s Services perpetuates a culture of secrecy that continues to prevent real change within the system.
We call on Minister Larivee to provide both the Advocate and all Albertans with an update on the status of these recommendations along with her department’s plan for full and complete implementation.”
