“87 years ago, five courageous Alberta women successfully fought to have women recognized as “persons” under the law. This opened the door for women across the country to sit in the Canadian Senate and to participate more fully in public life.
Today, our right to equal participation in the political process is a given, yet there remain subtle barriers for women in public life – barriers that prevent more women from putting their names on a ballot. We have come a long way in 87 years, but it’s clear that we still have more work to do. I encourage all Albertans to carry on the amazing legacy of the Famous Five by supporting women in politics and encouraging more women to run for public office.
On behalf of the Progressive Conservative caucus, I commend all women in public life in our province and look forward to seeing even more grace our Legislature, House of Commons, municipal councils and school boards in the future.”
