“Our caucus is calling for the Justice Minister to issue a Ministerial Order today that would prohibit any facet of the justice system from forcing victims to be in close proximity to their accused attackers ever,” said Progressive Conservative Caucus Leader and MLA for Calgary-Hays, Ric McIver. “This is common-sense action that can be taken immediately to ensure no victim is ever treated this way again in our province.”
This morning, the CBC revealed that Ms. Cardinal was not only detained for five days at the Edmonton Remand Centre while the preliminary inquiry into her brutal sexual assault took place, but also forced to travel to the courthouse in the same transport vehicle as her accused assailant.
“It is clear the justice system failed Ms. Cardinal at every turn, leading to her re-victimization at the hands of those who were supposed to protect her,” said McIver. “While we welcome the Minister’s commitment to conduct both internal and external investigations, we believe that this additional action will go a long way towards preventing similar treatment of victims in the future.”
