“Our Progressive Conservative caucus has received a number of questions and concerns from Albertans regarding this issue, and we share those same questions,” said Dr. Richard Starke, Progressive Conservative Critic for Health and MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster. “That is why we are calling on this government to table the draft regulations on medically assisted dying so all members of the Legislature can adequately debate this motion.”
The Government Motion on Medical Assistance in Dying would give the provincial cabinet the authority to implement their own set of regulations on this important issue in secret and behind closed doors. This could be done even before federal government regulations are in place.
“Introducing this Motion with only a few days left in the Legislature session is simply irresponsible of this government,” said Dr. Starke. “The government knew the Supreme Court deadline months ago and refused to act until now. Members of this House must view the details and specifics of the regulations we are expected to debate on behalf of our constituents.”
The Progressive Conservatives are connecting with Albertans on this issue through the ENGAGE initiative at www.abpcmla.ca/PAD. Caucus will then use the feedback gathered to hold this government to account. We must uphold the rights for Albertans wanting to access this service while protecting vulnerable citizens with vital and effective safeguards.
