“Rural Alberta families continue to be kept in the dark on how their communities will be supported during the accelerated coal phase-out,” said Rick Fraser, Progressive Conservative Energy critic and MLA for Calgary-Southeast. “For the government to pass the buck to power companies to manage support for affected communities is disgraceful. The livelihood of these communities is about to be decimated because of another ideological NDP decision and they are being left to support themselves.”
The previous government had a plan to responsibly phase out that would have encourage investment in clean coal technology and renewable sources of energy. By maintaining investor confidence in Alberta’s energy sector, jobs -- and more importantly, families -- in our coal communities would have been protected.
“This NDP government promised engagement and consultation with Alberta’s coal communities with the report from Mr. Boston and we have seen none of that,” said Fraser. “Our PC caucus has spoken with many municipality leaders who are concerned about what support families in their communities will receive. The government needs to engage with these communities before they implement policies that will kill their communities.”
