“The Progressive Conservative caucus was clear that we believe in the issue of climate change and that we must address it,” said Dave Rodney, MLA for Calgary- Lougheed. “However, this NDP government rejected a number of our amendments that would have addressed the human impacts on the environment without hurting our economy and global competitiveness.”
Progressive Conservative caucus amendments that were voted down include establishing accountability and reporting measures, protecting jobs in the forestry and tourism sectors, providing small businesses with vital supports to survive a new tax and making a carbon tax in Alberta revenue neutral, with a corresponding reduction in income tax. The only amendment passed by government was ensuring a receipt is issued when documents are taken by inspectors under Bill 20 legislation.
“We have heard this NDP government continuously say that the Climate Leadership Plan will give our province the ‘social license’ to get pipelines to tidewater,” said MLA Rodney. “Yet they ignored the lead from British Columbia where a revenue neutral carbon tax was implemented. If our province is to have a carbon tax to build pipelines, it should mirror our neighbour’s plan and have a minimal impact on our already struggling economy.”
The Progressive Conservatives will continue to hold this NDP government accountable on environmental stewardship without further hurting our economy and passing on a carbon tax to Albertan families during a time they can least afford it.
