“This leaked report shows that from the very beginning, the NDP government hasn’t been honest with Albertans when it comes to the true costs of both the carbon tax and the overall climate leadership plan,” said Interim Leader Ric McIver. “We are deeply troubled by the fact that instead of coming clean with Albertans about the real economic impacts of their plan, the Minister has doubled down on her deception by denying the existence of current data.”
The Progressive Conservative caucus introduced a number of amendments to Bill 20, the Climate Leadership Implementation Act, including one that would require periodic economic impact assessments on the carbon tax. This amendment, along with many others, was rejected by the government.
“This government has been determined to force their ill-conceived carbon tax on Albertans, regardless of the consequences,” said Progressive Conservative Environment Critic and MLA for Calgary-South East, Rick Fraser. “The fact that they were fully aware of these consequences, and actively chose to deceive Albertans, proves that the plan is deeply flawed and that even they didn’t believe it could stand on its own merits.”
