“The fact that violent criminals will not see their day in court because of the NDP government’s incompetence is truly disturbing,” said Mike Ellis, MLA for Calgary West and Justice & Solicitor General critic. “Last year, I warned the Minister of Justice about the need to properly fund Crown prosecutors and fill 35 much needed vacant positions. She chose to ignore that caution and today victims are paying for it dearly.”
The stigma surrounding violent crimes, including sexual assaults, makes it difficult for victims to come forward to report them. Today’s news about the Minister’s triage protocol empowers offenders and discourages victims to report crimes. Furthermore, it poses a risk to public safety as violent criminals may have their cases dropped and walk free.
“The Minister is talking about a ‘slim chance of conviction,’ but what this really amounts to is a slim chance of justice for victims,” said Ellis. “Right now, confidence in Alberta’s justice system under the leadership of the NDP is incredibly low. The Progressive Conservative caucus will continue to advocate for the allocation of appropriate resources for Crown prosecutors to ensure victims will see justice.”
