“Albertans who were looking for substantive action from this government on the economy no doubt find themselves disappointed after reading the contents of Bill 1,” said Economic Development and Trade Critic and MLA for Calgary-Fish Creek Richard Gotfried. “This Bill is a PR exercise disguised as serious legislation and merely pays lip service to the thousands of people across the province who have been profoundly impacted by the collapse of our economy.”
The provisions in Bill 1, the Promoting Job Creation and Diversification Act, propose to enable the Minister to establish programs, initiatives and committees to “help communities and regions build on their economy strengths” and “create partnerships that support entrepreneurship” but provide no further details on the shape these actions would take, who they will benefit or when they will be established.
“The fact that the NDP government has chosen to make this empty shell of a Bill their flagship piece of legislation this session is further proof that they haven’t the first clue when it comes to creating jobs or managing the economy,” said Gotfried. “Buzzwords and platitudes will not get Albertans back to work and debating this hollow Bill is a colossal waste of the Assembly’s time.”
