“The board appointments of Sarah Raiss and Sharon Sallows add two very qualified people to AIMCo and I wish them the best in their work investing Alberta’s public sector pensions and the Heritage Fund,” said Ric McIver, Progressive Conservative Caucus Leader and MLA for Calgary-Hays. “The NDP knew the public was watching closely after they repealed Section 5 and 6 of the Alberta Investment Management Regulation, so they appointed qualified people instead of their comrades with an NDP world view. Why were these sections removed in the first place? We demand that Minister Joe Ceci reinstate these sections immediately to protect the return on Alberta’s investments.”
In April, McIver requested the Auditor General investigate possible political interference into AIMCo by the NDP government, including quietly repealing Sections 5 and 6 and multiple emails demonstrating direct meddling from the Premier’s Office. Section 5 and 6 relate to the requirement of members to have relevant expertise and the condition to have a nominating committee advise the Minister on potential candidates.
“The NDP only seem to be accountable when the public has their eye on them and that is not good enough for Albertans,” said McIver. “We expect the Auditor General’s investigation to return transparency and independence to AIMCo so they can continue the important work we need them to do.”
