“This government has a habit of blaming others for the consequences of their own policy decisions – decisions that are costing Alberta taxpayers billions,” said Interim Leader and MLA for Calgary-Hays, Ric McIver. “The regulation in question has been a matter of public record and available via the Queen’s Printer for the past 15 years. The government failed to read the contract before triggering this clause with its poor policy decisions and are now attempting to save their political skin after making a $2 billion blunder. Today’s charade was nothing more than a desperate maneuver by a government desperate to hide its incompetence.”
Since details of the government’s climate change plan were first announced last November, all opposition parties in the Legislature have repeatedly warned that these policies would result in dramatically higher electricity prices. The government has clearly chosen to ignore these warnings and is now looking for a way to avoid taking responsibility for the burden their decisions will place on everyday Albertans.
“Instead of using the highly skilled and talented legal minds available to them in the Alberta public service, this government has chosen to hire an out-of-province lawyer who formerly served as the B.C. NDP’s lead counsel in their opposition to the Northern Gateway pipeline,” said Rick Fraser, Energy Critic and MLA for Calgary-South East. “This should tell Albertans everything they need to know about the irrational and ideological nature of this decision.”
