“Children are dying in care and we simply don’t have the luxury of time to wait for a new Ministerial panel to act,” said Ric McIver, Interim Leader and MLA for Calgary-Hays. “In order to ensure the lives of at-risk children are protected, this Progressive Conservative caucus is willing to extend the Legislature session to introduce legislation that will begin saving lives immediately.”
The Progressive Conservative caucus proposed amendments to Section 4(1) and 4(6) of the Child, Youth & Family Enhancement Act, which would require any person who has reasonable and probable grounds to believe that a child is in need of intervention to report the matter to police. The proposed changes would also increase penalties for offenders.
“I spoke with all parties before introducing these amendments in the Legislature today, including the government,” said Mike Ellis, MLA for Calgary-West. “I shared these amendments in good faith in hopes that we could work collaboratively to find solutions. For the Premier to insinuate that the opposition is trying to score political points with the death of a child in care is an insult to every legislator in the Assembly. We care deeply about vulnerable children in the province and will continue to cooperate with all parties in hopes of implementing these much needed changes as soon as possible.”
