“I am extremely disappointed that the government has rejected this important amendment,” said Rick Fraser, MLA for Calgary-South East and Registered Paramedic. “Emergency Medical Service personnel are no less essential to public health and safety than police or firefighters, yet by excluding them from this legislation, Albertans can no longer be certain that EMS will come to their aid should a strike be taking place. This is simply unacceptable.”
“The government’s arguments for why they are refusing to designate EMS as an essential service do nothing to reassure Albertans that in the event of job action, an ambulance will still be available to help them in a crisis,” said Fraser. “To suggest that the services these men and women provide is anything other than essential is a slap in the face to the workers and to all Albertans who depend on the reliability of EMS services.”
The Progressive Conservatives will continue holding this government to account and providing constructive, common sense solutions for Albertans.
