“The numbers are clear and what they’re telling us is that the NDP simply cannot help themselves when it comes to overspending taxpayer dollars,” said Progressive Conservative Caucus Leader and Finance Critic, Ric McIver. “This government had an opportunity to reduce the amount it borrowed in the name of Albertans yet consciously chose to do the opposite, leaving an even larger burden of debt for our children and grandchildren. It’s well past time for this government to start taking responsibility for the choices it makes.”
The 2016-17 fiscal year saw revenues rise in categories beyond the government’s control, including oil and gas royalties and investment income, while revenue in categories impacted by NDP policy, like corporate and personal income taxes, are down despite massive rate increases imposed in 2015.
“Minister Ceci and the NDP have shown a complete lack of respect for hardworking Albertans,” said PCAA Leader Jason Kenney. “They rammed through a job-killing carbon tax that they never campaigned on, ripped up power producer contracts, and have given away billions in corporate welfare. The NDP is also nickel-and-diming folks by hiking beer taxes. All of this fiscal madness is costing Albertans tens of billions in borrowed money and interest payments. Even at the most basic level, NDP incompetence is quite apparent. They raised corporate and personal income tax rates, and as predicted, are generating less revenue.”
