“We are extremely disappointed to learn that the Government of Quebec is taking legal steps to block a pipeline that would bring economic benefit to the entire country,” said Interim Leader and MLA for Calgary-Hays Ric McIver. “The Quebec government has been more than happy to benefit from Alberta’s prosperity in the past and now that the tables have turned and it’s Alberta that needs support, they are nowhere to be found.”
“The fact that the Quebec government would rather import its oil from the Middle East by tanker than work with its partners in Confederation to bring Canadian oil east completely contradicts their message of environmental concern,” said Rick Fraser, Energy Critic and MLA for Calgary-South East. “Simply put, transporting crude oil by pipeline is by far the safest option we have, with a 99.9 per cent safety record. The suggestion that TransCanada would attempt to subvert environmental laws and regulations in any jurisdiction is political gamesmanship of the worst order and the Quebec government should be ashamed.”
The Progressive Conservatives are calling on Premier Notley to defend Alberta and our economic interests from these baseless political attacks and to finally make securing market access for our oil and gas products a priority for her government.
