Dating back to 1699, Vaisakhi marks the birth of the Sikh religion and the New Year. During this time, many Punjabi people will celebrate by decorating their local Gurdwaras in beautiful colours, sharing traditional foods with friends and neighbours and taking part in the nagar kirtan procession.
Alberta has a thriving Sikh community, which has been a proud contributor to our provincial culture, economy and the Alberta way of life. Vaisakhi is a time for seva, or selfless service, which fits in well with our province and our values. Albertans are well known for seva, always willing to lend a hand to those in need, expecting nothing in return.
Enjoy a joyous Vaisakhi!
