“For months I have been asking the Human Services Minister to make good on his government’s campaign promise to end SIS,” said Sandra Jansen, Progressive Conservative Human Services Critic and MLA for Calgary-North West. “Last week in the Legislature, he finally confirmed that his department will do the right thing and end the policy, but we still need more details. PDD advocates across the province welcome this news and I am proud to have played a role in achieving these positive results.”
Now that the Minister has committed to ending SIS, the Progressive Conservative caucus and PDD advocates are calling on him to provide the community with additional details on timelines and replacement policies. MLA Jansen will continue to urge the NDP government to end SIS while the ministry reviews the flawed program.
“SIS and safety standards are symptoms of a much larger problem. Ending the SIS program will have such an incredibly positive impact on thousands of Albertan families,” said Leah McRorie, a PDD community advocate. “So many Albertans have unfortunately been through this humiliating process. To finally be treated equally with the dignity the community deserves will make us feel heard and respected.”
