“Sexual assault is a terrible crime that impacts millions of Albertans. It leaves victims with emotional and physical scars that can last a lifetime. Educational campaigns like Sexual Assault Awareness Month educate Albertans about the importance of consent, while survivors of sexual assault will learn that there is hope towards recovery.
Recent studies show that sexual assault is the only violent crime in Canada that is not declining. It also shows that minority groups like persons with disabilities, Aboriginals and the unemployed have a greater chance of being sexually assaulted.
It will take a coordinated and collaborative approach from community advocates, legislators and all Albertans to reverse these concerning trends. Together, we can end sexual assault. The Progressive Conservative caucus remains committed to listening to the stories of survivors, removing the stigma around reporting assaults and providing the necessary supports.
To any Albertan who has experienced sexual assault, we believe you and support you in your journey to recovery.”
