“Governments across the country continue to grapple with the complex set of issues that contribute to the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in child welfare systems and Alberta is no exception,” said Progressive Conservative Advocate for Indigenous Relations and MLA for Calgary-Lougheed, Dave Rodney. “We take responsibility for the role that our previous governments played in creating a system that consistently fails Indigenous children and encourage government to adopt all recommendations. We are grateful for this opportunity to learn valuable lessons from the past – lessons that will lead to improved outcomes for Alberta’s Indigenous communities.”
The Progressive Conservatives thank both the Auditor General and the Child and Youth Advocate, as well as the dedicated staff at Alberta Human Services, for their excellent work to strengthen government’s ability to effectively deliver these critical programs and services.
“Taking an honest look at how we got here is vital,” said Rodney. “I look forward to having these important conversations with Indigenous partners in the future as part of reconciliation in Alberta.”
