“My colleagues and I strongly condemn the imposition of this new softwood lumber tariff on Canadian forestry producers. It is disappointing to see yet another U.S. aggression, despite multiple judgements in Canada’s favour over the past 35 years.
Alberta’s forestry industry supports approximately 18,000 jobs and contributes more than $5.3 billion to the GDP, making it an integral and essential pillar of our economy. We know that producers across the province have faced challenges and uncertainty due to damaging NDP policies. We urge the government to not only fight this unjust tariff but also to ease the burden of policies that place additional uncertainty on Alberta’s timber supply. This, combined with the negative impacts of the carbon tax, are putting thousands of forestry jobs at risk.”
