“I am encouraged to see that the recommendations suggested in the Alberta Bail Review address many of the concerns I raised with the Minister upon the announcement of the review process last year. The majority of these recommendations are positive steps and issues I have been advocating for since 2007, when I was directly involved as a bail hearing officer with the Calgary Police Service.
It is crucial that the Minister move quickly to implement many of these recommendations, a number of which are directly relevant to public safety and to ensuring the proper system is in place to keep repeat offenders off the street. The Minister needs to be upfront with Albertans about how long it will take to implement key recommendations, particularly the ones concerning Section 524 of the Criminal Code and how the Justice Online Information Network system is utilized.
I’m pleased that recommendations from the Progressive Conservatives were considered and accepted, and I look forward to working collaboratively with the Minister to ensure that public safety continues to be a top priority for this government.”
