“On behalf of the Progressive Conservatives, I would like to welcome Prime Minister Trudeau to Alberta. We think it’s crucial that he see firsthand how the current economic crisis is affecting Albertans and talk about ways his government can help.
We sincerely hope that the Prime Minister recognizes that Energy East is one of the greatest nation building opportunities Canada has seen in a generation. He has the ability to cut through the regional squabbles that threaten to derail this project and show real leadership that will have a lasting impact. We encourage him to take an active interest in our country’s future prosperity by working with provincial and municipal leaders across Canada to find a way to get this and other pipelines built.
The single biggest economic obstacle we face in Alberta is the lack of access to tidewater. Without the ability to expand our markets, we are forced to sell our oil and gas products at a deep discount – a discount that we simply cannot afford when the price of oil is this low. But it’s not just Alberta that suffers as a result – the impact is being felt right across the country, whether in the form of job losses, tumbling stock markets or a reduction in Alberta’s ability to contribute to Confederation. That’s why getting pipelines like Energy East built is key to securing our collective economic future.”
