“What happened to little Serenity was unspeakable and we demand justice,” said Ric McIver, Progressive Conservative Caucus Leader and MLA for Calgary-Hays. “To ensure this never happens to another child in Alberta again, we must stop this culture of secrecy and begin a public inquiry. We have been hearing conflicting reports from this government and it’s time to set the record straight – from the abuse Serenity suffered while in care to the botched medical examiner’s report and criminal investigation.”
Concerns regarding the Child Intervention Ministerial Panel have been brought forward in the Legislature numerous times by the PC Caucus. Panelists are forbidden from discussing Serenity’s case, which would provide critical information and insight into fixing systemic problems with Alberta’s child intervention system.
“When I learned that nobody from this government reached out to Serenity’s family during this terrible ordeal, I was shocked,” said Mike Ellis, MLA for Calgary-West and PC Caucus Justice Critic. “This family has been kept in the dark about their 4-year-old’s death, and they only ask for reassurance that this will never happen to another family. The Ministerial Panel risks failing vulnerable children without critical information from the Minister, but Serenity’s family is not giving up. They have asked me to continue to pressure this government for a public inquiry and to legislate Serenity’s Law, so we can begin saving lives today.”
