“This government had an opportunity to use this increased revenue to rein in spending and tackle the growing deficit,” said Progressive Conservative Interim Leader and Finance critic Ric McIver. “Instead, they chose to continue down a path of fiscal mismanagement and out-of-control spending. They are using financial slight-of-hand to hide the fact that while the deficit remains steady at $10.8 billion, their spending continues to climb.”
The NDP has also underspent their capital plan by nearly $1.2 billion, a capital plan that was to create tens of thousands of jobs for Albertans. Instead, unemployment remains virtually unchanged and Calgary’s jobless rate is the highest in the country.
“The NDP’s self-proclaimed ‘Jobs Plan’ failed to live up to its name,” said McIver. “The reality is that a budget designed to put the tens of thousands of unemployed Albertans back to work has netted a mere 17,500 jobs – the majority of which are part-time. Every new job in Alberta is vital to getting our economy back on track and the NDP have completely missed the mark. This level of fiscal and economic mismanagement should be of great concern to all Albertans.”
