“The NDP government claims the economy will recover in 2016,” said McIver. “The only way this government is reducing the deficit is through higher tax increases on Alberta workers and business owners. This government is calculating its forecasts using higher oil prices than our March budget figures, and oil prices are even lower now. Thousands of Alberta workers have lost their jobs thanks to the uncertainty created by this government. More than $30 billion in investment that creates jobs and stability for Alberta families has left Alberta since the spring election. The NDP’s claims are unrealistic and cannot be trusted.”
The government stated today the First Quarter Fiscal Update was finalized at the end of July, and does not reflect recent additional volatility in oil prices. The NDP government is still projecting the budget will not be balanced until the 2018-2019 fiscal year. McIver said today’s news is further proof the NDP government still does not have a plan for dealing with Alberta’s economic downturn.
“Clearly, red is the new black for this government and, with $6 billion in new borrowing and no budget, Albertans will have no idea how their hard-earned tax dollars are being spent until later on this fall – after the federal election,” added McIver. “How long will this Premier continue to blame world oil prices for her government’s inability to deliver a plan to get through this downturn? How many jobs will continue to be lost before this government finally deals with this situation? To add insult to injury the NDP promised to eliminate school fees, and families are now having to pay higher school fees than ever. They deserve better.”
