“The NDP government has put all small businesses in Alberta on notice – the Labour Relations Board is now in charge,” said Ric McIver, Progressive Conservative Caucus Leader and MLA for Calgary-Hays. “The Progressive Conservative caucus fully supports compassionate care leave for hard-working Albertans, but rolling these important amendments in with ideological changes to the Labour Relations Code will hit Alberta’s small businesses especially hard.”
These ideological changes include effectively eliminating secret ballot voting on union certification and collective agreements for a compressed work week and overtime pay, leaving businesses to shoulder even more costs during difficult economic times. This will deter job creators from choosing Alberta as a place to do business or existing businesses from expanding, hurting diversification in our province.
“It’s clear that this NDP government has rushed the consultation process and will try to push this legislation through the Assembly as quickly as possible,” said McIver. “We urge the Labour Minister to separate the employment standards amendments and conduct proper consultations on costly changes to the Labour Relations Code. Alberta’s business community has been loud and clear that they have not been heard on these important issues. The Minister must take the summer break from the Legislature and start to listen to the concerns of job creators.”
